A GARDEN IN BLOOM

This is how the ceramic artist, Vira Tomashevska, calls her private show at the Ivan Kavaleridze Museum-Studio. Her works are pictures composed (“made up”) of separate elements, each of which is a totally self-sufficient work of art: autumn leaves or spring flowers, drops of water, birds, fish, ships with multicolored sails, intricate masks, and houses — some resembling those from the Middle Ages, some like those from a fairytale. They are reminiscent of the ancient architecture of Uzhhorod, where the artist studied.

Tomashevska creates a world of various details: dark woods, deep seas, wonderful cities, and the seasons of the year (Winter, Winter Mood.) Some of her works are created in a somewhat different way and feature a religious theme (Still Life, Autumn Monastery.)

Even more surprising are the naturalness and expressiveness with which the ceramic statuettes of characters perform the story of Christmas and Escape to Egypt, which remind us of Ukraine’s vertep traditions.
