Christmas in the Carpathians

In the red-letter Route No.1, Den’s creative team continues to follow the course of strengthening the “internal Ukrainian integration”
24 December, 18:14

This means better knowledge of our country’s cities, villages, and regions, each of which is unique and can share its “cultural treasure” with the other. We have already examined Sumy, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Volyn from unexpected and interesting angles and received a lot of positive comments from their residents. But it is only the beginning. The latest glossy focuses the Carpathians or, to be more exact, Christmas in the Carpathians – a double portion of magic.

“It seems to me that you can celebrate Christmas in every region and, concurrently, come to know more about this locality. But as long as the places, where Christmas traditions were stifled and partly ruined by Soviet power, have not yet established a new tradition, there is a wish to visit the places which have preserved some authentic examples worthy of being followed as well as the vast deposits of energy which our society needs so badly. For me, the Carpathians are a mystic world,” Den’s editor-in-chief Larysa Ivshyna says in her traditional introductory column. “Obviously, the Carpathians is not only tourism, not only skiing, although this should also be part of love for this area. Instead of envying Slovakia or Switzerland, we should just create a world of our own amidst this wonderful nature. And Christmas is a nice occasion for doing so. It fills me with great joy that Ukrainians are regaining Christmas.”

One can speak very much about the Carpathians. Accordingly, Den’s team prepared the most interesting material for the Christmastime Route No.1. You will find here an interview with Mariana Sadovska about her wish to touch the sources of the tradition and one with Anton Sviatoslav Greene who plays the protagonist of Oles Sanin’s film Povodyr (The Guide). The boy who resides with his family in Detroit, USA, tells about his Ukrainian relatives, the making of the film, and Ukrainian Christmas. In the latest glossy, Den’s contributors also tell an incredible story of the White Elephant astronomic observatory, fill a “backpack” for winter mountainous hiking aficionados, disclose special recipes of local dishes, and show a selection of the world-famous designers’ best-known collections with Carpathian motifs and of Top 5 Christmas and New Year books.

Also read on the pages of Route No.1 the stories of “their own Carpathians” by the writer Taras Prokhasko, the singer Ruslana Lyzhychko, and ambassadors of various countries to Ukraine. And, naturally, traditional infographics – this time themed as “Made in the Carpathians.”

And this is not all that awaits you on the pages of the new Route No.1. Please ask for the 27th issue of Route No.1. Christmas in the Carpathians, a monthly glossy supplement to Den, at newsstands from December 26 onwards or order it on Den’s website.
