The European Court of Human Rights has informed Russia that it must pay more than 500,000 euros to the families of eight people, who were allegedly abducted by security forces in Chechnya.

They went missing in 2002-04 and, presumably, are no longer alive. Judges in Strasbourg declared that Russia breached four articles on human rights. They also drew attention to the numerous flaws in the investigation of the fact of disappearance. Chechnya has suffered heavy losses as a result of military clashes between federal troops and rebels, which over the years have turned into a smoldering conflict.

The judges outlined the facts of violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, in particular the right to life, prohibition of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners and the humiliation of their dignity, the right to liberty and security, and the right to an effective legal defense. All abductions took place in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, which was almost completely destroyed in the collision but is now largely rebuilt. Since the second Chechen war in 1999-2000 almost 5,000 people are on the list of those missing.
