As we covered earlier in the article “Mykola KHRIIENKO: ‘I managed to combine things that do not usually go together: tourism, sport, and journalism’” (The Day, No. 52, September 13, 2012), our reporter participated in the socio-ecological press trip down the Dnipro that called for a 364-kilometers-long canoe voyage from the Kyiv Reservoir dam to the Kremenchuk Reservoir dam near Svitlovodsk. The aim of this trip was to investigate the situation with land grabs in the water protection zone along the river’s banks and explore the real life of the people who live along the main water artery of the country. Khriienko telegraphed from Svitlovodsk on September 8 reporting to the editor on the trip’s successful completion: “I have completed the socio-ecological press trip down the Dnipro by Robinson canoe dedicated to the 16th anniversary of Den. We have rowed 375 kilometers from Kyiv to Svitlovodsk, Kirovohrad region from September 11 to October 7, 2012, investigating the current ecological status of the Dnipro and contemporary life of the people living on its banks. On behalf of Den’s staff and readership, I laid flowers on the graves of Taras Shevchenko in Kaniv and Vasyl Symonenko in Cherkasy. As soon as I have processed the collected materials along with photographs, my story will be presented to Den for publication as the report of everything I saw, photographed, heard and experienced during my fascinating trip down the Dnipro.”
