1616: The first dated book is printed at the Kyiv Pechersk Monastery of the Caves.

1720: Peter I of Russia orders Kyiv Governor Golitsyn to impound the ancient scrolls, chronicles, and books stored at the monasteries and convents of Ukraine.

1906: The first Russian version of Taras Shevchenko’s Kobzar comes off the presses.

1917: The Sovnarkom adopts a decree establishing the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for the Struggle against Counterrevolution, Speculation and Sabotage (the Cheka), to be reorganized as the State Political Directorate (the GPU) in 1922.

1938: The Sovnarkom decrees the issuance of employment record books.

1949: The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR adopts a decree instituting the International Stalin Prize for Strengthening Peace Among Peoples.

1995: The G-7 and Ukraine sign the Memorandum of Understanding in Ottawa. 2004: Presidential candidates Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovych meet in the second televised debate.
