1939: The Supreme Soviet of the USSR adopts a decree making Western Ukraine part of the Soviet Union, “reuniting” it with the Ukrainian SSR.

1941: A task force is attached to the Military Council of the [Soviet] South-West Front to monitor and coordinate the partisan movement behind the Wehrmacht rear lines.

1941: Soviet troops retreat from Sevastopol.

1945: A Ukrainian emigre center is established in the [West] German town of Aschaffenburg.

1974: Donbasivska Power Plant starts generating in Donetsk oblast, capable of transmitting electricity over a distance of 1,500 km, for the first time in Ukraine’s power-engineering history.

1991: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts the Declaration of the Rights of Nationalities of Ukraine.

2004: The Central Election Commission finishes counting 94.24 percent of votes: 40.12 percent for Viktor Yanukovych; 39.5 percent for Viktor Yushchenko.
