Chernomyrdin Promises a Two Way Bridge With Ukraine

09 April, 00:00

“We, in Russia, will work with the parliament elected by the Ukrainian people,” Interfax- Ukraine quoted Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Viktor Chernomyrdin as saying on April 3 in Kyiv, who added that bilateral relations following the election of a new Verkhovna Rada “will change only for the better,” and he believes “other options are out of the question.” When asked to comment on the possibility of Moscow ignoring the Our Ukraine faction following statements by certain Russian politicians to the effect that there are forces in the bloc which oppose Russo-Ukrainian relations, Ambassador Chernomyrdin said he had “heard nothing” of such statements. He downplayed such an assumption as “ill-advised,” reiterating that Russia will cooperate with the parliament elected by the Ukrainian people. “We will erect a big and broad two-way bridge for cooperation with the Ukrainian parliament,” he underscored, according to Interfax-Ukraine. The Russian ambassador also stated he was “stunned by the openness” of the elections, especially the voting. Being one of the Russian diplomats who visited three electoral districts as observers, Ambassador Chernomyrdin stressed he has never seen “so much transparency” before, although he admitted there might have been some “organizational shortcomings.” As he put it, at one electoral district he heard someone complain that “a senior couple were voting together in one polling-booth,” to which the ambassador retorted: “There is no way a grandpa will leave his grandma.”
