Between avant-garde and tradition

As The Day was told by the organizers of the exhibit in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, it has been over 60 years since the last Vasyl Krychevsky’s exhibit in Ukraine was held when the author was still alive. A large number of the artist’s works have been lost! The present exhibit displays about 70 paintings and graphic works, most of which have not been exhibited yet. One of them is the landscape found and restored by the scientists of the National Art Museum of Ukraine called The Night. Khan Palace in Bakhchysarai (1901) that researchers had considered lost.

“World famous Ukrainian artist Vasyl Krychevsky was a personality who was as gifted as Renaissance painters and whose talent was realized despite political barriers and cataclysms of the first decades of the 20th century,” curator of the exhibit Iryna VOZIYANOVA emphasized. “An architect, the first artist of the Ukrainian national cinema, painter, graphic artist and stenographer, master of decorative and applied arts and designer, teacher, researcher, and expert in traditional arts – this is all about Krychevsky. He was also a founder and the first chancellor of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, head of the artistic movement in Kyiv, author of graphical works for stamps and the small and large Ukrainian national emblems, founder of the famous artistic dynasty… Krychevsky’s searches and talent are titanic and his personality is worth admiration and new understanding: once the artist combined the traditional art with the avant-garde and his works are still feeding the modern European art and design.”

The exhibit “Vasyl Krychevsky. Between Avant-Garde and Tradition” will be held till November 10.
